What is Palliative care?

Palliative care is also known as “End of Life Care”. The focus of Palliative care is maintaining comfort, relieving stress and pain, and supporting the client and family, at each stage of their journey. It is a very specific area of care for those with life-limiting, or terminal illnesses.

Palliative care often takes place within a Hospice but many people are now choosing to stay at home, surrounded by their loved ones instead. If you are thinking about palliative care at home, rest assured that with Intrust Care you are in safe hands.

As a quality care provider, we encourage and highly recommend that everyone has an Advance Care Plan in place.

An Advance Care Plan allows you to record your wishes and decisions in advance. This will be in relation to your care, types of medical treatment that you would wish or not wish to receive and anything else that is important to you as an individual. If you are ever in a situation where you are unable to make decisions for yourself, having an advance care plan in place will give both you and your loved ones peace of mind that your wishes will be respected, wherever possible.

To find out more about what an Advance care plan is and how to make one, please visit our understanding advance care planning & power of attorney page.

Our approach to Palliative care

We understand that when you have received a terminal diagnosis from your medical team, it can be a highly distressing time. Therefore, our approach is to provide as much help and support as possible, working alongside the other healthcare professionals that are part of your larger team. We aim to answer any questions you may have about your care and what to expect moving forward. Not only do we support yourself, but also your wider family. Making each day count is one of the most important parts of our service.

Our carers are fully trained to provide you with the high level of care that you need and deserve. At all times we ensure that we:

  • Maintain your dignity
  • Use your personal preferences to shape your care
  • Ensure your comfort and assist with pain management
  • Provide advice and emotional support to you and your loved ones

We closely work alongside your GP, District Nurses and any Macmillan Nurses or other professionals that are involved in your care. This allows for seamless and professional care at all times, helping to reduce your anxieties at what is already a difficult time.
